The Last Daughter

A new work by Rachel Strayer, directed by Elaine Difalco-Daugherty

Premiere Costume Design by Aleigha Cheng

In this futuristic drama, Eve—the last fertile woman on Earth—is detained in an indestructible glass box. While the people around her search for a husband with whom she can repopulate the world, Eve questions her desire to have children at all. As a writer, Eve will do whatever it takes to bring her words to fruition even when she seemingly has nothing to write with. The premiere production of this work explores the autonomy—or lack thereof—of women, and the multifaceted conflict of reproductive rights, motherhood and sexism.

After meeting with the director and other designers, I gathered visual inspiration and got drawing. Below are my initial thumbnail sketches as well as a table showing the color relationships throughout the show.

Major Challenge: BLOOD!

Eve cuts her arm open to write on the box walls in blood, requiring and effect on her body and the box. Getting enough blood into a box where almost no items are allowed was challenging yet fulfilling.

This is the mechanism I created to release the blood!

Many tests were done before I presented the best options to the team. I experimented with several different recipes and application methods using trial and error to determine which worked best. In the end the effect was great!
