University Theatre Dance Concert 2023

Student dancers and designers, in collaboration with Japanese Troupe, Masashi Action Machine, in a 2-Act Dance Concert.

I had the opportunity to costume design for a student-choreographed dance piece. The concept behind this choreography was a main dancer who is going through internal struggles and is convinced that her friends (the other dancers) are working against her, when they are in reality trying to help her. In the end, the friends succeed in pulling the main dancer out of her funk and she rejoins the group in peace.

I started by doing research on color psychology to find what hues would give that emotion on stage.

Process

I created a mood-board based on info from the choreographer, thumbnails showing my initial ideas, then larger sketches showing the concept.

We pulled the dresses from stock, and mocked up some arm pieces. Then after some fittings, I dyed the dresses and extra pieces.
